Welcome to Ask Me Anything, a community for asking, and answering, some of life's less Googleable questions.

If you're new, please check out the community profile. As with an empty swimming pool, there's just a few things we'd like you to be aware of before diving in head first.

Feel free to join us on our IRC channel - the chat channel details are in the profile page above. Mibbit and browser add-ins like ChatZilla are easy ways to get into it even for the non-tech-savvy!

It's been another year since the last official picture post, and y'all probably look different now. I'm kind of imagining you having lost limbs, and being all deformed, and under those circumstances the old picture post would basically amount to fraud. So in order to set things straight, we'll start over, with another new picture post.

So, in the form of a question - what do you look like?

Rules
1. Aim for only one or two pictures per comment, nobody wants to see your whole "Me" album
2. If you want to post a new picture (having already contributed), just post a new picture as a new comment on the post itself, it's all good, you can leave the old one up..
3. These pictures will not be used for the purposes of any silly meta games, you have my word on that. The most that I'll do with them is link to them from your comments - there is no AMA Hot Or Not.

Have fun :o)

If you had to cut just one of these people out of your life, which would you pick?

Somebody who became obsessed with you to the point of continual harrassment
69(75.8%)
Somebody who made up lies about your best friend trying to sleep with them as some sort of grab for attention and/or revenge
13(14.3%)
Somebody who spread nasty rumours about a mutual acquaintance which damaged your relationship
9(9.9%)

Remember, you can only cut out one of these people - the chances of all three qualities existing within just one extremely fucked up person are fairly slim, right..?

Dearest laaviebohemei,

So, you posted this anonymous question:

http://community.livejournal.com/ask_me_anything/23998488.html

And for a second I'm thinking hey, is that about me? But no, because I've only interacted with you twice, which would be these:

http://community.livejournal.com/ask_me_anything/23848657.html?thread=504930769
http://community.livejournal.com/ask_me_anything/23985530.html?thread=508260986

So I'm thinking nah, not me - where's the power abuse there?

But then came this comment from you:

http://community.livejournal.com/anonymous_qs/634854.html?thread=12974310

And, sensing the hostility, I figured that perhaps you were talking about me. Or perhaps you weren't. The gross injustice of this all, of course, is that you won't be able to say either way, because I'm throwing your fucktard ass out of here forthwith.

You picked the wrong week to fuck about and piss me off. There's your power abuse for you. Now fuck off.

Any questions from anyone else?

Uncommon enough that you've never met somebody with the same surname who wasn't a relative?

AMA Categories Game

Oct. 2nd, 2009 | 06:47 pm
posted by: unknownj in ask_me_anything

Boy do I have a game for you..

The AMA Categories Game is simple. People will reply to this post with Categories. For example, "Boy's Names", or "Bodies of Water".

You must then reply to the categories with something that belongs to that category. The catch is, it must start with the first letter of either your username, or your real, actual name.

So for example, if the category is indeed "Bodies of Water", then tma could reply with "Tahoe". Or, if he wanted to use his first name (which while not being "Alex", still starts with an A) then he could say "Aral Sea". If he says "Pacific Ocean", then we know he doesn't understand the alphabet, and we laugh at him.

I hope that's fairly clear to all of you. Bonus points will be awarded for originality (that is to say, answers that nobody else has).

And go :o)

Dilemma

Sep. 22nd, 2009 | 11:07 pm

You are the leader of your nation, elected by your people to guide them through these uncertain times.

But oh no! Disaster has struck... oh, I don't know... let's say Turkey. An earthquake has rocked an impoverished region of Turkey, and people are dying.

The good news is that you have employed some unnervingly excellent mathematicians in your government (that means me), and they tell you that by sending aid, you can save exactly 10,000 lives.

However, your country has problems of its own. That money, if put into your own ailing health service, would save 1,000 lives, of your own citizens.

You must give a television address, explaining to your people which option you chose, and why. What reason are you going to give them?

Does your decision change if only 100 domestic lives were saved by keeping the money? What if it's 9,000 domestic lives - does that change anything?

For those who don't already know..

LiveJournal have implemented a feature that allows paid users to opt back in to displaying adverts on their journals, but have it so that those adverts are linked directly to the user's own AdSense account.

So if you're a free user, who sees adverts in the normal course of browsing LJ, you might also see them on the pages of paid users, except clicks will give them money instead of LJ (as would be the case if the adverts were served on a Plus account page).

1. How do you feel about that feature?

2. Do you understand why a whole lot of people are really pissed off about it? If so, can you explain it to me? This has been on the cards for years, is opt-in only, and people with paid accounts still won't see the adverts.. What's the big deal?

3. Are you going to throw a shit-fit when it's enabled for communities and I inevitably switch it on in AMA in order to try to make back some of the money I spend on all the paid accounts and hosting? Would an annual "Give AMA Money" drive be preferable to having one or two ads show up on pages?

What are some questions / areas that would be well suited to a proper "debate" in AMA, where people deliberately take sides in order to ensure balance, and make sure that the topic gets fully explored?

Ideally, they would be issues where two definite sides do (or could) exist, but where the current membership of AMA would make it hard to actually have a debate (i.e., most of AMA actually agrees with a single side, and there'd be no real argument)..

During anti-matter annihilation, is the apparent loss of mass due to the quarks and anti-quarks in the respective baryons finding a lower energy state by combining with their counterparts to produce three mesons for each pair of baryons and anti-baryons, thus causing a reduction in gluon particles and a corresponding decrease in apparent mass? Or am I barking up entirely the wrong tree here?

And a question for everyone else, to keep you interested - how do YOU personally reconcile conservation of mass with particle annihilation? Do you find that quantum mechanics helps or hinders your efforts?

Based on this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8240206.stm

Is the refusal by mainstream parties to share a platform with the BNP (who have members in the European parliament and are a registered political party) acceptable?

If they consider the BNP to be a racist band of cunts (and they'd be right), can we fault them for acting in line with their consciences and refusing to participate in any forum that the BNP is invited to?

Or does it amount to a form of censorship, in which they discredit any outlet that gives the BNP a voice by distancing themselves (and therefore the legitimate mainstream political process) from that outlet?

Mainstream parties often claim that they won't engage with the BNP because it legitimises them and their racist policies - is that a decision that mainstream political parties are allowed to make? Is it up to them to decide which rival parties should be considered legitimate? After all, they're a registered party, with representation on councils and in Europe - does the political establishment have the right to continue to marginalise them?

In the movies, when there's a zombie apocalypse, most of the time the characters have no idea what a zombie actually is. There is no zombie fiction in the universes in which zombies actually turn out to exist.

It just seems that in those sorts of movies, the characters haven't been prepared for the events by their own popular culture at all, and have to start from scratch.

With that in mind, if some sort of terrible apocalyptic scenario were to unfold, do you think it would be something totally original that movies had never even considered? Or do you think that somewhere, somebody would have anticipated the situation through the medium of the Hollywood blockbuster?
