Welcome to Ask Me Anything, a community for asking, and answering, some of life's less Googleable questions.

If you're new, please check out the community profile. As with an empty swimming pool, there's just a few things we'd like you to be aware of before diving in head first.

Feel free to join us on our IRC channel - the chat channel details are in the profile page above. Mibbit and browser add-ins like ChatZilla are easy ways to get into it even for the non-tech-savvy!

Here's the batch of submitted Valentines. Everyone who submitted one should have received a Valentine. There were quite a few no-shows but Kat and I made extras for everyone who submitted one. I had some trouble with images uploaded to Flickr so I didn't direct link them and instead provided a link to them.

So, without further ado, happy Valentine's Day to AMA.

For those who cook:

Do you have a secret ingredient that goes into something that you don't tell anyone about? Something you put into a particular dish that makes it your own? Without telling us the dish, will you share the secret ingredient with us?

My secret ingredient is ranch dressing mixed with BBQ sauce.

Final AMA Valentines reminder!
Submit your valentines here before Saturday. I've only received 1/5 of the total so please get cracking on them soon and submit them ASAP!

If you had to appear on a show like 30 Days, Wife Swap, Trading Spouses, or any other show that forces you to uproot and experience a life that's not at all like your own (perhaps even one you're in opposition to), what kind of person would you be swapping with?

Who do you think would benefit more from playing (temporary) switcheroo: you or the person you switched with? Why?

Side note!
For anyone who might be interested in the AMA Valentine Matchmaker 2009, but hasn't signed up, please click here and comment in that post that you'd like to be added to the list. I'll be assigning valentines soon!

Am I the only person on Earth whose alcohol tolerance goes up and down? One day it will take me six beers to get a buzz going and then, out of nowhere, I have a day like today where I grab a single bottle of Leinie's 1888 Bock out of the fridge and I'm practically hammered.

Kat thinks I should go balls to the wall and have two bottles.

Seriously though, what the hell man?

I've always had a bit of confusion on this subject and maybe a New Yorker or someone in the know can clear it up for me.

I thought I once heard that the professional sports teams in New York are divided between social classes. IE: blue collar workers are Yankees fans and white collar workers support the Mets. Is that the case?

How does a New Yorker pick who "their team" is? Is it by social class or where they live (metro vs. 'burbs)?

Who, generally, roots for the teams below?
NY Giants
NY Jets
NY Yankees
NY Mets
LA Lakers

Bushbots vs. Obamatrons

Jan. 21st, 2009 | 08:31 pm
posted by: sneakthief in ask_me_anything

Throughout the Bush presidency, there was a lot of complaints from liberals about the portion of his base that, in their eyes, would have happily followed Bush to the gates of Hell. This herd behavior and refusal to question even the most absurd actions of the Bush administration were hot-button issues for a lot of Americans and citizens of other nations as well.

Now, is it just me or does Obama already have as large a sycophancy as Bush ever did? Is this a concern of yours? Is there really any difference between an unquestioning follower and another?

It seems like with the passing of baton from one leader to the next, so too has one herd of unquestioning drones given way to another congregation of obstinate peons.

Sports teams

With the Superbowl coming up, chatting about sports is on the rise. So let's talk about sports in a way that even those who don't give a damn about them can participate.

So, ignoring your locality or allegiances or any other silliness, what's your favorite team logos from the following leagues? (Sorry non-Americans, I don't know about any of your team logos!)

Links lead to lists of teams and their logos.
NFL (football)
NHL (hockey)
MLB (baseball)
NBA (basketball)
Can't find a good showing of popular collegiate team logos but feel free to include that in your list!

My favorite logosCollapse )

... With a list like that I'm wondering if I should just stop laughing at furries and accept my place in their ranks.

ETA: Are you people serious? We're talking about logos and every single commentor is just saying "this is my favorite" and posting their local team. So I reiterate: just pick the logo that appeals to you. Ignore who your favorite team is and the people so far should think about getting new favorite teams because you're rooting for some losers.

You've been shanghai'd by kidnappers and they take you to a reclusive home and lock you into a bedroom. You will be in the bedroom for five years and there's no possibility of escape. However, your assailants are actually fairly considerate. You get a comfy bed, bathroom, small supply of snacky foods, and every morning they give you new clothes and you give them your worn ones. They also provide you with all meals and they're pretty good cooks. They have provided you with an HD plasma who-whatsit and a state-of-the-art computer. The computer has internet access but all chat programs are blocked as is browsing. The TV gets limited channels. They make this offer:

What three video games do you want? These will be your main source of entertainment for the next five years so choose wisely. If a game has expansions, count all of them as one. Collections are also okay, within reason. Your captors will provide you with the necessary hardware/system to play them.

Assume that all video games with voice or chat programs are still allowable, but for some reason or another, nobody you tell about your situation will believe you or rescue you.

Side question for gamers: Have you been playing Left 4 Dead? The trial is almost up and holy shit, this game is awesome.

I'm talking about stupid little facts that absolutely ruins something else because when you see them you'll notice that little thing every time.
EG:

1. McCain blinks a lot. Like ... it's amazing that photographers ever catch him with his eyes open. Now that I've pointed that out you'll notice it every time you see video of him speaking.

2. Videogames: God of War plays exactly like Kingdom Hearts.

3. The Texas Longhorns' logo is of a guy sitting Indian-style on his flying carpet, only upside down:

I think Richard Chaves, who played Poncho in 1987's action blockbuster Predator alongside two now-politicians, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura.

The election/blood test/coup has come in and it's a landslide: You're now the leader of your country (the one you live in now, dur). Congratulations, I'm sure you're thrilled/terrified!

Your first act of leadership is to declare three things:

1. What will be your car?
2. What will be your pet? And yes hobobebop, no pet is an option.
3. Where will your retreat away from the capital be located? Yes, it must be in your own country.

Choose wisely, as your opponents will certainly bring up your poor choices in upcoming elections. It might be wise to display a bit of political savvy by making nationalist choices.

Explain your choices please!

Clearly, you want to meet the Macbook and not the bitch.

Which door do you open? 1, 2, or 3?

After you make your selection, the game show host (let's call him Honty Mall) opens a door you didn't select to show you one of the bitches standing behind it. He then offers to let you pick a door other than the one you picked originally. Do you switch to the other door?

Pretend the audience isn't giving you their input, so don't read the comments before answering!

Re: Academic Research

Okay everyone, it's the middle of September and already we're getting an influx of "participate in my academic survey" posts. School's only just begun FFS, isn't it still too early to get lazy?

From now on, mods have the go-ahead to delete all obvious surveys/polls for coursework. These posts do nothing to spark community conversation and are just a chore to fill out or look at.

This shouldn't even be an issue. If you know anything about desirable data pools and proper results, you'd know that livejournal is actually a very shallow data pool. Here's a metaphor: you walk into this massive community center (the internet) that holds all sorts of events for all sorts of people. People of every walk of life are there, and they're there in abundance. So you gather your survey up and wade through this crowd of people and you don't ask anyone a single question, you just pass by. Finally, you arrive at this small room made up of mostly 15-40 year old people of moderate to high economic upbringing. They're also about 55% white women and 35% white men, leaving only 10% of the people in this room to be non-white. So you start handing your survey out, collect your answers, and pretend you've come up with strong data.

Not right.

We've even had a thesis data seeker come by today. That shit gets published and the world doesn't need any more misinformation. Fair warning: if I see another data collector who seeks to publish his/her findings, I will be contacting your institution to inform them of your "research" methods. Asking a Livejournal community to be your sample pool is lazy, inefficient, and just plain stupid.

Go about collecting your data from the proper channels, not here.
