Welcome to Ask Me Anything, a community for asking, and answering, some of life's less Googleable questions.

If you're new, please check out the community profile. As with an empty swimming pool, there's just a few things we'd like you to be aware of before diving in head first.

Feel free to join us on our IRC channel - the chat channel details are in the profile page above. Mibbit and browser add-ins like ChatZilla are easy ways to get into it even for the non-tech-savvy!

18/01/14 Current Community Events and Info:
Darcie was going to change the sticky but didn't. Some crap about buying a house, I find it hard to believe she's too busy to be online all of the time.

Last night, I stumbled on a website about the Men's Rights Movement.  While I haven't swallowed the red pill quite yet, I confess they have some interesting concepts.

(warning, long personal TL;DR ahead)

Some observationsCollapse )

Curious to hear what others think about the MRM.

If no, why not?

When was the last time you jumped to a conclusion that caused you to treat someone unfairly? I frequently cross the road if I am walking up against a gang of kids who are being loud or brash. I know it's probably prejudiced, but i do it anyway, like all the time.

Do you have a job that you love and plan to progress in but that other people look down on and/or assume must just be temporary?
If so what do you do when people are snotty about it?

Sex Shops

For those of you who shop at "novelty"stores that sell sex toys and things of that nature, do you ever feel judged by either the customers or the employees?

I ask coz...yeah...every time I go into one, I feel like I get these: "Yeeeeah, the fake kind is the only dick she's getting."

Tonight the woman who rung me up muttered "virgin" under her breath when I left.

How do you handle yourself around a person who talks a lot of smack about others?  The type of person who is nice to your face but talks trash when you're not present.  Because you observe them doing this to others you have a hunch that they do it to you. :(

Is it rude to laugh at foreign pronunciation?

Russians laugh at Chinese salesman because he has very funny accent.

Do you laugh at someone's accent?

Does whether or not a person cheats on people (presently/in the past numerous times, etc) affect how your level of friendship or how you feel about that person? Why or why not?

As a plus, does it affect how you view your politicians?

Most Popular US Baby Names in 2010 by the Social Security Administration

What popular or emerging baby names do you dislike? What makes you cringe when you hear a mom screaming it at her kid at the playground?

I never really cared this much about the issue until the the Aiden/Jayden/Caden thing began. Jayden is currently 4th most popular boy name in the United States!!! which makes me want to defect to Cuba. It even beat out Aiden at #9, which at least isn't a totally made-up name like Jayden. It also seems like every girl is Ava. It's nice, but every girl? Every?

Calling people what they want to be called

Oct. 1st, 2011 | 10:32 am
posted by: registermonkey in ask_me_anything

Inspired by an earlier post about political correctness:

In being politically correct, or perhaps just being nice and calling people what they wish to be called--how far do you take it?

Situation1: A friend of yours is biologically male, and he's so masculine that he could never pass for female.  Nonetheless, he feels like he's female.  He wears makeup and dresses (and looks like a dude wearing makeup and dresses, not a woman) and insists on being called "she."  What do you do?

Situation 2: A friend of yours is biologically male, but looks very feminine and is taking female hormones.  Wearing women's clothes and makeup, he looks and sounds so female that almost no one would realize he's man.  He insists on being called "she."  What would you call him?

Situation 3: A friend grew up with you in Georgia, in the United States, where you've both lived your whole lives.  He's American, but he starts watching BBC America and becomes obsessed with British culture.  He starts speaking in a fake British accent, says that he "feels" British and was born in the wrong country and hopes to emigrate to London someday.  He insists that you stop reminding him that he's actually American, and he insists that you introduce him to people as "my British friend."  What would you do?

Situation 4: A friend of yours is clearly white, but decides he "feels black" on the inside.  He begins speaking like a rapper from the inner city (or at least, his idea of what an inner-city rapper sounds like).  He insists you start referring to him as your "black friend," because he feels like he was born the wrong race, and he insists that race is nothing but a social construct anyway.  What would you do?

Situation 5: A friend of yours has never been to college or to a seminary.  But one day, he visits one of those online churches that will ordain anyone for a few dollars, and then he visits one of those online universities that will grant anyone an honorary doctorate for a few dollars.  He gets his ordination and his doctorate and starts insisting that you call him "The Reverend Doctor John Smith."  What would you do?

for me, it's the attitude/thought that birth mothers gave their children up for adoption because they didn't want to deal with them/didn't care about them.

Do you ever judge people you dont know on a superficial level ?

For example, today at Walmart I saw a teenage with most of her asscheeks hanging out of the bottom of her skirt and totally has some not so nice thoughts...but it was gross.

How much does someone's effort at typing affect your opinion of them? I tend to have a little more respect for those who put effort into it... not that I'm randomly an asshole to people who don't or anything.

Let's exclude people who don't speak your primary language so I don't get a bunch of answers about that. It's usually fairly easy to tell the difference between someone who just sucks at typing and someone who doesn't speak the language.

If you try think of yourself as a person who doesn't judge people based on appearance/other inconsequential factors, when was the last time you found yourself doing that exact thing and judging someone?

I ask this because I currently feel like kind of a crappy person, but I am planning to fix it. No flaming/hypocritical judgment here, promise.
