Bringing it up

Dec. 12th, 2012 | 07:20 am
posted by: coral_amber in ask_me_anything

So I'm in a position I've never been in before. Basically a dude and I have been in intimate situations twice, though we had sex only one of those times. The first time it happened I didn't really know him that well but by the second time I had spent enough time with him to actually grow a bit fond of him. I honestly don't think I got attached to him because of the sex the first time, though. But even though I'm interested I can't really read him. I don't spend a whole lot of time with him since he doesn't live near me but when we are together there's a lot of obvious chemistry. But like I said, I can't get a read on what it all means to him. I'm seeing him again this weekend and I'm thinking of asking him how he feels if we end up sleeping together again. But is this even a good idea? Is sleeping together a few times and a bit of chemistry not enough to go on? And if I should say something, how should I even approach it?

Yes, I am aware that I am thinking about this WAY too much. But any outside perspective is appreciated.

Feeling really down

May. 18th, 2012 | 02:27 pm
posted by: happyduck1979 in ask_me_anything

I fairly recently suffered from a nervous breakdown.  It has taken a heck of a lot of work, but a year and a half later I find myself being able to smile, laugh, and be a productive member of my community again.  The pain is always in the background, but I have worked hard to learn to live with it and try to continue to reach to be a better person in spite of it.

Today I got news that is leading to a major, major set back.  I did my best to prepare for the news.  I have several things booked over the next few days to try to make sure I do not fall into a really deep depression that can grip me for months.  Lots of distractions, fun things with my family.  I am making sure to surround myself with people who care and understand and do not judge me for who I am at times like these.  I am watching me medication closely.

Now here is the question.  I am interested in knowing what other people in this community do when they are feeling their lowest.  I mean, I feel like a total failure and that, with the exception of my husband and my daughter who are the brightest point of my world, life is just not worth living anymore.

There are a bunch of religious limitations as I am an Orthodox Jew and on top of that am in my year of mourning for my father so no public entertainment, movies, concerts, shopping, or anything like that.  Also, a huge car repair last week means that money is exceedingly tight- so frugal ideas are very welcome.

Thanks,
HD

People who have dealt with psychiatric disorders:

How do you deal/have dealt in the past with people trying to cheer you up by telling you that your feelings are completely normal and try to comfort you by trying to get you to see things in a more positive way?
How do you explain to people that you don't think what you're feeling isn't ordinary sadness or fear?
Does your reaction change depending on whom you're talking to, for example a friend, parents, social worker or doctor?

You Ragin'?

So I have a temper. Really, I have anger management issues.

I've spoken with a counselor and the advice has been to stop and figure out what's causing my anger. Is it frustration, embarrassment, a combination of fatigue and stress?

The problem I've found is that my anger escalates very quickly, and I don't think while it's happening. I haven't had any success with kick-starting that thought process to stop and analyze while I'm going.

I really want to work on this. How would you force the mental reset in that kind of situation?

Bonus: Do you have any personality flaws that you are working to overcome? Have you had any success with it? What helped most?

There may be spoilers for various books in comments.

My answer: I'm reading the second book in The Hunger Games trilogy and oh my gosh, I have no idea how much longer I can trust this author! Every time I think they're safe, something else happens. I've literally gasped several times throughout reading these books, which never happens to me as I usually can call what's going to happen before it does.

xanax and other prescription drugs

Dec. 6th, 2011 | 02:17 pm
posted by: methorphan in ask_me_anything

i have a prescription to 1mg xanax. without a tolerance, it really gets me out of my head. take it for more than 2 days consecutively and i hardly feel it.
i haven't slept for a few days which tweaks me out and makes me a serious mess. panic attacks galore, freaking out for no reason and being completely irrational and delusional. so i took a xanax a couple hours ago to calm my nerves after a couple panic attacks. i felt okay for a while but it always makes me think and i usually end up getting really depressed or over-emotional and overreact to everything and basically i always end up the same mess i was before, except this time i am completely confused and have no touch with my emotions and become uncontrollably anxious and upset and i usually have no reason/forget the reason/it was all just a delusion of a situation that happened completely differently than i thought.
sorry fi this doesn't make much sense. i'm out of it. i wish i wasn't. because being all dazed out and and having very dead end thought processes one after another is never ever good when i start thinking critically about some serious bullshit, or if something bad happens, i don't know.
my question is that i was wondering if any of you have experience with other anti anxiety drugs, or possibly anti psychotic? one that will take me out of my delusional, derealized, panicked and scary episodes. without making the same result like xanax does, sloppier and harder to comprehend which leads to more frustration and panic? anti depressants are a big no no and always will be. did anyone else have the same problem with xanax and did any other fast acting anxiety drug help you out better?

How do you respond when someone has hurt or angered you and apologizes, but you're still angry or hurt? Does the intent of their statement/action/whatever upset you mitigate anything?

Inspired partially by thinking about intent when it comes to -isms, and also by the fact that it drives my boyfriend crazy when I'm still upset with him after he apologizes (I usually respond with something along the lines of "I know you didn't mean to do x and thank you for apologizing. I'm still a bit upset, though, so just give me a little bit to cool off". and then he gets annoyed cos it seems like I'm just blowing his apology off).

It seems like we're taught from children on up that saying "I'm sorry" is a magical fix-all bandaid, and that isn't always the case, which is where I think a lot of disconnect when it comes to intent comes from. What do you think?

Staying home vs going out?

Oct. 23rd, 2011 | 12:17 am
posted by: dierdrae in ask_me_anything

So as an outgoing introvert (it makes sense), it's sometimes hard for me to tell whether I want to trek out to a party or stay at home and chill.  Usually I can definitively say "Yes, I want to dance!" or "No, I won't have any fun, I want to watch TV!" but sometimes I find myself really indecisive.  More like: "I don't feel like it right now but maybe I'll change my mind once I'm on the subway and then afterward I'll be happy I went?"

So does this ever happen to you, and if so, what's your tie-breaker?  I usually ask myself whether I'd regret not doing whatever it is, but that doesn't quite work if something isn't at least a little important.

Jealousy

Sep. 27th, 2011 | 03:06 pm

posted by: calcifer13 in ask_me_anything

Having jealous is probably a natural kind of mindset.  When there is  someone superior from you, people often get jealous and are hard to admit the fact,  therefore some people intentionally hurt the superior ones to distract his/her grief.  But as we get older, we should learn more on that matter.  But still that jearlousy feeling stressed out many middle aged, or even older people.  As for me, I have almost no jealousy feeling towards anybody in the world.    How do you deal with this jealousy feeling?

Probably think on both side.

1)  If you happen to meet someone superior than you and you might get jealous on him/her

2) If someone get jealous on you and persistenly hassle you.

Annoyed

posted by: hashishinahooka in ask_me_anything

Does it annoy anyone else when people say things like "There is no such thing as normal"?

I'm in the process of getting my mental health problems diagnosed, and today I found out that I have misophonia, which I've dealt with most of my life. I find my life frustrating because no matter what I'll never be able to do the things that most normal people do, and it pisses me off that my frustration is so easily dismissed with "There is no such thing as normal". Bullshit. If that was true, people wouldn't constantly tell me how weird I am and how much they dislike me because of it.

I find it on the same level as people who tell me that I'm not fat/ugly. Denying it doesn't make me feel any better. It actually makes me feel worse because not only do I have this problem, you're trying to tell me it doesn't even exist.

Am I the only one who feels like this?
