I'm getting a root canal this afternoon :( I'm happy because this tooth has been bothering me for literally three years (I just got insurance this past march but couldn't do anything about it due to pregnancy), but I'm also afraid :X.

Those who have had a root canal, can you tell me a bit of what to expect? My dentist said it should take 75 minutes but other than that I am clueless. Thanks in advance. And please don't scare me more.. lol.

Anyone else have all of their wisdom teeth?

My dentist(s) acts like it's extremely unusual for someone to have all four of them. I've had them since I was 15, so close to twenty years now.

If no, got any other unusual teeth issues?

I think that sometime today or yesterday I took an itty-bitty chip out of a molar somehow. It's pretty small and doesn't bother me unless I run my tongue over the chipped place. Obviously no pictures, since pics of the inside of a mouth don't work out very well.

Has anyone here done anything like this? What did you do about it? How did that work out?

EDIT: fuck, now I'm convinced that I managed to chip TWO molars. Both same side, roughly same place on each tooth.

So - share yours!  Do you have your wisdom teeth right now?  Did they come in at all?  Have you had them removed?  What was it like?

Thanks!

Serious Question

Jan. 27th, 2012 | 01:51 pm
posted by: susieqpotter in ask_me_anything

I needed some dental work done that I could not afford. My fiance of three years offered to pay for the work for me, saying he could get his grandmother to finance it for him and then pay her back. So the work is done, and we're all good. Until yesterday when the dentist emailed me. He said that Chase (the creditor) was debiting them for the work done, claiming it was fraud. The dentist said the company wanted them to file a warrant for identity theft, forgery, and grand theft of services against me. Apparently, my fiance never got his grandmother's permission to do this.
I am just in shock. I'm in training to be a teacher, and this could really kill my chances of a future. I never meant to steal from anyone. The only thing that might help me is that I actually didn't sign anything related to the financing of the work. My fiance made himself an authorized user on his grandmother's account and then paid for my work. If that is the case, can they actually come after me? What do I do?

Inspired by the "how often do you replace your toothbrush" poll, I'm curious how often people floss? Do you lie to your dentist (or anybody else) about how often you floss? And, if you work for/as a dentist, how easy is it for you to tell when a person is lying about their flossing habits?

If you have kids and the tooth fairy is a tradition you still hold in your household, how much do you give them per tooth?

Bonus question: What is the most amount of money you've heard a kid get from the tooth fairy?

I used to get between $1 and $2. If i were to ever have children (highly unlikely), there would be no tooth fairy in my house.

I mean, I can understand hot and cold.  Those are temperatures, not flavors.  I mean... teeth can't taste.  Nerves can be bothered by heat and cold, but taste?   I don't get it.

I've never been do the dentist outside of regular appointments (cleaning and fillings), and as such I've never really called in going "aahh something's wrong can you fit me in soon?!" - But now feels like one of those times where I should maybe suck it up and give them a call. Or should have done so at the beginning of the week. Or something.
Cut for talking about my mouth holeCollapse )

So AMA, is it worth it to give my dentist a ring or should I just try to bring it up during my cleaning?

EDIT: Called the dentist who did the extraction. They think it's nothing, but had (apparently a lot of) open time for me so i'm going to get it checked out, and it's covered. yay!

My question is, have any of you ever used Crest Whitestrips? (sensitive formula or otherwise) I THINK I'm starting to see results, but I'm not 100% sure... Have they worked for you if you've used them? How quickly did you see results? Did the results last?

This person I know has/had a cavity on just about every single tooth in his mouth. He actually had a cavity on his top central incisor, and I don't think I have seen that ever before I met him. Anyway, he bitches all the time about the amount of dental work he needs and blames his dental problems on "cavity-prone teeth." But as I got to know him, I discovered that he habitually goes days without brushing his teeth, and even when he is relatively good about his oral hygiene habits, he only brushes once a day in the mornings before he has to interact with people. So, the whole using his "cavity-prone teeth" thing an excuse for his cavity-filled mouth, annoying or not?

Dental advice

Jul. 27th, 2010 | 12:40 pm

I have a history of grinding my teeth and my dentins are exposed, but I had never experienced pain for years. For the past week or so, my teeth in the back left corner of my mouth has been giving me discomfort. The discomfort used to be on and off but now it has become more prevalent. The only time that I would not notice it is when I am eating and my mouth is being active. When I am not chewing, the (slight) pain would be back. There is no pain when I eat/drink hot or cold foods. I know that it is slowly getting worse because the pain is starting to distract me during the day (when I am not chewing/eating) and I scheduled an appointment with a dentist that is coming in two weeks.

I am just wondering whether anyone has experienced something like this before or whether anyone has any idea what kind of dental condition this is. I've read some scary stuff online but I don't know how accurate those things are and I don't want to jump to conclusions. Also, my dentist is kind of a scary person who doesn't break bad news to people well so I'd just like a heads up before I go see him. I brush and floss my teeth on a fairly regular basis although there have been nights when I just zonk out on my couch and forget to...

Any info would be appreciated!

dental woes

Due in part to bad genetics, in part to a childhood devoid of fluoride, and in part to excessive sugar consumption, I have ridiculously unhealthy teeth. Last time I was at the dentist (which was about six months ago) they said I had around fourteen cavities, and lose pieces of my teeth (usually the back ones-- they just sort of disintegrate here and there) about twice or three times a year. Obviously something needs to be done about this, but I'm broke and don't have dental insurance.

My question is, do you AMAers have any ideas or experiences regarding cheap dental care? I've heard about people getting really cheap dental work by volunteering to be a "guineau pig" for new methods, etc. Has anyone done this? What was your experience? How could I find something like this?

Do you still have your wisdom teeth (if you have yet gotten them - some of you around here are YOUNGUNS!! ;-p) or did you have them removed? If you had them removed, were they removed because you were actively having a problem with them or was it more of a preventative measure? Those who have not yet gotten their wisdom teeth may answer with whatever their course of action will be upon receipt of said teeth. ;-)

This question brought to you by having encountered several people lately who were under the impression that you MUST have your wisdom teeth removed.

Oh, and my answer is I still have mine. ;-)
