Is there any positive marketing ploy that companies put on their food/other packaging that instantly have you putting said item back on the shelf? I don't mean what is in the list of ingredients on the back of the package or a label. I mean, things the companies use as a positive.

EG, the one I really, really hate is when packages announce: "Made with REAL cheese" or some variant. I instantly put it back. I can't help thinking that if said product must proclaim that one of its ingredients is REAL (in huge, bold lettering) then WTF are the other ingredients?

Dictate my level of justified violence

Jul. 3rd, 2012 | 12:52 am
posted by: suibhne_geilt in ask_me_anything

Earlier this evening, Cayce & I were out on the front terrace (the grassy strip between the sidewalk and the street) of my house, very clearly enjoying a nice dinner together. Table full of food & sangria in the shade on a hot summer day.

Some dude that's going door to door with some sort of energy efficiency company comes by. Asks if we're the home owners, and proceeds to spiel at us. I'm polite enough to let him interrupt our dinner with the base spiel (after all, Cayce & I were dining in some sort of quasi-public space), but then he asked if he could schedule some time for one of his people to do their thing. I politely declined, but took his literature and said if I was interested, I'd give a call. More minor spieling ensues, with another attempt to get me to schedule some time, right then and there, to have some people come wander through my house. I politely decline, again... He attempts a third time to get me to drop everything while I'm enjoying a fine dinner with my lover so I can figure out some time to have this assessment done. The third time, he finally got it that I was not going to schedule some time, and went along his merry way.

So, AMA, if he'd have not gotten the clue and made a fourth attempt, I think I would have been justified in dropping all pretenses of civility. Just how much incivility would you have let me get away with?

Every time I see it I'm split whether it's a good motto or not. It makes me laugh and obviously gets stuck in my head, but on the other hand it's maybe not improving the image of the company any.

If you were in charge of marketing for Fluke Transportation, would you okay this slogan?

Okay, so backstory before my question: I went out with a guy in September, and ever since he's been asking me out, flirting with me, and generally ignoring the numerous times I've told him that it's not gonna happen. I've been referring to him as 'my stalker' for a while, although I've been trying to stop that partially because it's not really at that level of creepy, and because I was genuinely trying to stay friends with him.

Long story short, he never really stopped being creepy, and today (because he said something along the lines of 'when we went to that movie together, I could smell your pheromones and I knew you were nearby', I kid you not), I blocked him on MSN/Twitter and unfriended him on Facebook.

Have any of you had someone crush on you to the extent that it got creepy before, or had to completely block someone from all modes of communication with you? How do you deal with something like an email afterwards, or the next time I see him in person (which, while not incredibly common, occasionally happens)?

Are you easily wooed by new varieties or flavors of a product you already like?

Have you ever tried out a new version and liked it way more than what you regularly buy? Conversely, have you tried out a new version of something and been very disappointed in it?

I am always suckered into trying new versions or flavors of things. My regular dish soap, but in orange scent instead of chemical clean? I'm all over it! My favorite potato chips, but in cheesy jalapeno instead of regular jalapeno? Sign me up.

This frequently backfires on me as new versions of things are not always that good. My most recent experience with this was Eggo waffles. I bought the French toast waffles and was kind of grossed out by how they tasted. =/

Naming an Event

Feb. 17th, 2011 | 02:47 am
music: Delerium - Poem 02 - Innocente (Falling in Love) (feat. Leigh Nash)
posted by: palmer_kun in ask_me_anything

OK, so I'm involved with the planning for an event later this year.
Our problem is that we've run into a wall for naming it.

The event is based on Costumes, Cosplay, and Alternative Fashion.

Obviously, anime is part of this, being how much of Cosplay is anime based.

However, we're trying to avoid using the word Anime (or anything related), because we're not restricting this to anime stuff. We want all kinds of costuming, be it anime, or Victorian Masquerade. Also, Alt fashion, which is anything from goth to steampunk.
We will be specifically looking for dealers and sponsors that are relevant to costumes, cosplay, props, wigs, alternative fashion, makeup, photography and the like.

So, the word Anime, and related terms are not options.
Also, we're looking to distance ourselves from a local event that's had a dramatic meltdown recently.
As such, we are also avoiding the word Evolution, or anything related to that ("Genesis" has been shot down for this reason)
Along with this, anything that would abbreviate to AE (such as "Alter Egos") is a no go.

If it makes a difference, it's being planned for August.

So... do people have ideas for names or naming themes we could go for with this?

I've been getting together my gear for the trip, and I'm curious:

What would you bring halfway across the world?

I'll be in a hotel for some, in camp at a national park for 4 days, in a different hotel for other parts.

I've got my supplies, but I got inquisitive about what others would do. Everyone I know that's done this trip was a Peace Corps kid that lived in a hut.
