Crazy Christmas

When I was a kid, my grandmother lived about 20 miles away from us. When my parents wanted to go out on the weekend, Granny would come to our house and spend Saturday night with us. This was the highlight of my week, because she always slept on the fold-out couch and let me sleep with her - which was code for staying up late to watch wrestling and roller derby (this was the early 70’s). She never asked my brother or sister, only me.

One year when I was 8, Granny was late getting to our hosue and when she came in, she had a box with a turtle in it. Seems she found it on the road and didn’t want it to get run over, so she brought it to us. It was the weekend before Christmas, so we named it Nick. We had that turtle for almost 10 years before he died.

For the past 25 years, my brother, sister and I have exchanged something at Christmas with a turtle on it, in honor of Nick the Christmas Turtle. This year, my sister’s Christmas card had a turtle on it, and my brother gave me a bag of Turtle candies.

What silly, unique holiday traditions does your family have?
