I was brought up in New Jersey, under the notion that the Deep south of Texas to Georgia to North Carolina and everywhere in between is stuck in the pre-1964 era when it comes to race and gender relations. While I know better on a mental level, I still read in the news and anecdotal evidence that certain pockets of ignorance and prejudice still rule. On the other hand, I just chatted with a gay guy telling me about a vibrant gay scene in Birmingham, the last place on Earth I would have figured such a thing would exist.
And so I ask you AMA, what is the REAL South, as you know it?
