Cats and dogs

I have the world's most wonderful male (neutered) cat. He's about 5 years old and has claws. My SO wants to buy a puppy. How to I get them to like each other without having to deal with blood and fur everywhere? I live in a travel trailer because of my SO's work so putting them in separate rooms is not really an option.
