How good a debater are you?

Do you have the skills needed to argue your point, to the extent that people at least "see where you're coming from", even if they still disagree?

I am pretty lousy. I lack the patience to keep pushing when people are stonewalling. I end up more inclined to say "fuck it" and walk away. I'm difficult to convince that I'm wrong (though if you CAN convince me, then I'm the first to apologize) and I just end up irritated. I'm usually not a "please validate my unwavering opinion" type - or at least I like to think that I don't end up that way - that's why I walk away first.

Are you a better masterdebater than I am? (and no, I will not disclose the topic of conversation that spawned this post, because that's not what this post is ABOUT ;) )

Ethical/Business Question

I had a customer buy a skirt from me at Balticon.  I make all of my skirts large because I can always re-size smaller, but I can't add fabric to make them larger.  I took it home, re-sized it to fit, and mailed it out with insurance and delivery confirmation.  This past week she called telling me that the skirt had never arrived.  I was at a campground and couldn't check immediately so this morning I checked.  According to the Post Awful it was delivered at 12:08pm on June 1st.  I can give her the delivery confirmation number so she can check for herself to see that it was delivered.

I know that legally it isn't my responsibility.  I did what I said I would do and once it went in the mail it was out of my hands.  However, my question is:  should I refund her money if she didn't get it?

Ethically I know I don't have to do it, but I'm a very small business and can't afford bad word of mouth.  I also can't afford to be refunding money to people when it wasn't my fault.

Any home project/plumbing experts here on AMA? Any idea how much it would cost to add a shower to a basement? Not a full bath, just a shower.

I remember growing up, my dad hooked a hose up to the water lines that were connected to the clothes washer, and ran the hose to an area over a drain in the basement. He bought a circle rod, hung it from the ceiling so it circled the end of the hose, and hung a shower curtain from that. I'm not looking to go that rustic, but since that was so simple and cheap I figured it can't cost too much more for a proper shower.

Local Wireless Networks

If you use wi-fi at home, what are the names of your neighbors networks that you have access to? Disregard whether or not they're password protected.

We just set up our new internet and we got to create the name of our network, which got me thinking about whether or not people come up with crazy names for theirs or if they just mostly use their last name, etc.

Calling all gardeners!

When I moved into my townhouse, someone from the board of directors gave me this plant. All the tag says is "money tree." I'm not sure of it's actual name. ANYWAY. If you look toward the bottom of the plant, there's a new growth. I'd really like to somehow make this into its own plant and not just a growth off the main plant.

But I'm very unsure on how to do it. Is it possible to remove that little growth and somehow get it to grow?

Picture in case the link doesn't workCollapse )

My gums have been really itchy for a few days. This is not the first time, and it usually seems to be caused by something I've eaten. The only new food I've consumed recently were the garlic & salt chips I had a few days ago. Usually when this happens, the itching goes away in maybe three days, but this time around it's really persistent. I'm not going to the doctor because of something this small, but it's annoying nevertheless and seems to be taking really long to pass. So I'm asking you: do you have any ideas what I could do to make this itching go away faster?

How do you suppose one should approach linking material that's NSFW or "isn't suitable for minors" (interpret as you will) to Facebook, when not everyone who will see it is an adult?

By that I mean is it wholly inappropriate for that content to be linked there in the first place? Is doing so something you find irresponsible or questionable in judgement? If one party holds the responsibility here, which one is it -- should the one linking filter people out, or should the potential minor viewing it use their own discretion?

I've been having a heated conversation with my SO the whole day. It's nothing serious, but it's going on for a while.
We live in a studio apartment and the one below us belongs to this weird guy who lives alone. I can't tell you why but I have the feeling he's snooping on our conversation. I know he's in but he doesn't have any tv, radio, or music on, so I'm sure he's eavesdropping. I even shouted "I can't believe you did that!" when he turned the tv off but I don't think he got the hint.

AMA, what should I do?

Dime a Dozen

For those of you who work in the entertainment business (music, theatre, TV, etc) or in the arts in general and live in places known for that (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.), how bad is the competition in your eyes?

I'm wondering because I've been scared of living somewhere like Chicago, NYC, or LA because I'm always told there's too much competition. However, here in Detroit, there are not many paying gigs to compete for. I am starting to wonder if maybe it would be better to move somewhere I have jobs to compete for versus living somewhere there isn't a lot of competition but not many jobs either.

Family resemblance?

Jun. 18th, 2012 | 10:48 pm

Are you good at seeing family resemblances, either in your own family or in other people's? For example, I can't see any resemblance between me and my sister, but everyone we meet claims that she and I are identical. Yesterday someone thought my niece was my daughter even though I don't think my niece looks anything like me. But when I look at other people's photos, I can immediately spot family resemblances. I seem to spot family resemblances better among people who are not in my immediate family!

They say you never go to local attractions because they are near to you i.e. you might drive hours to a themepark but never visit the lake on your doorstep.

Who wants to post their current City/location in the hope that other members will google* "things to do in...."** and suggest local attractions they would make them visit if they were coming to their town?

you don't have to do them IRL or anything - but I am not gonna stop you.

*other search engines are available.

Inspired by a question below -

What local attraction are you embarrassed to admit you have never visited? Attraction can be theme park, famous restaurant, national park, landmark, etc. Also mention what area this is! For the purposes of this question, local means close enough to visit for a day, or weekend, not necessarily within a few minutes of home.

For me - I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have never been to Yosemite.

For those of you that have devices with apps, what apps do you have? What apps would you delete in place of a bigger app (say Sims FreePlay, which takes up a shitload of space)?

Right now, I have the LJ app, Facebook, meetme, Skout, No Zombies something, another zombie game, Pandora, My Town something, a writing app, a reading app, and Rat On a Skateboard.

Meetme and Skout are usually the first to go, followed by free games (except for Rat on a Skateboard--I've worked too hard). Pandora stays regardless.
